Oral medicine is the specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and medical management of complex diagnostic and medical disorders affecting the mouth and jaws in other words it is a special competence concerned with the health of the oral and para-oral structures. Oral Medicine includes the diagnosis and medical management of diseases specific to the oro-facial tissues and of oral manifestations of systemic diseases. It also includes the management of behavioural disorders and the oral and dental treatment of medically compromised patients. Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is the specialty of dentistry and discipline of radiology concerned with the production and interpretation of images and data produced by all modalities of radiant energy that are used for the diagnosis and management of diseases and conditions of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Clinicians trained in this discipline manage oral mucosal diseases, salivary gland disorders, and facial pain syndromes and also provide dental care for patients with complicating medical disease.  

The department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including Radiovisiography (RVG), Dental X-ray units, Digital Panoramic imaging machine, and a clinical laboratory incorporated for various investigations.

3. ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY

Oral pathology is a branch of dentistry that represents a correlation of basic sciences with clinical dentistry. It is the scientific study of diseases that combines knowledge with investigative procedures helping in the diagnosis and further treatment of diseases. In modern day medicine it also helps in assessing the prognosis of the disease.                      

The program is offered to provide training in clinical and laboratory oral pathology and Oral microbiology with students enquiring deeply into the mechanism of oral diseases and oral manifestation of systemic diseases and advanced diagnostic techniques,. They gain experience through teaching in lectures and seminars and in presentations.

The specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology is a confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry. This department deals with the academic disciplines of Oral Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Embryology and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and Microbiology. With these subjects, students gain knowledge about the normal oral cavity and the oral cavity in the state of disease, thus forming a foundation for the understanding and diagnosis of head and neck diseases. To achieve this purpose, the department has a multitude of comprehensive teaching aids, such as PowerPoint presentations, models, charts, microscopic slides, microscope attached to a CCTV, internet facility; and in addition, conducts quiz, seminars and discussions.

4. CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY AND ENDODONTICS

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics is the branch of dentistry which deals with the treatment of caries, malformed, discoloured, nonesthetic, or fractured teeth and endodontics deals with treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases and dental pain management.this branch focuses on the art and science of diagnosis, treatment and also prevention of diseases and defects of the teeth in order to retain and restore the normal function of teeth and to enhance their aesthetics. The primary goal of this department encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of sequelae of dental caries and the other defects of natural teeth; techniques and procedures to restore the teeth to full function and appearance in an aesthetically pleasing manner with as little loss of the healthy tooth structure as possible.

The department is of the firm belief that “every child has a fundamental right to total oral health” and strives towards achieving this end. Thus this department deals with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of all types of diseases of deciduous and permanent teeth including associated structures of children. Also special category of patients who are dependent on care takers for their day to day living and those with special health care needs  are treated on priority basis.        

Goal of The Department is to Identify and differentiate between normal and abnormal somatic dento- facial and psychological growth and development, Understand child behavior and anxiety and be able to communicate and manage children showing apprehension and moderately disruptive behavior using behavioral and pharmacotherapeutic techniques, Develop and accurate database from child and parent information and formulate an accurate diagnosis, Diagnose and plan appropriate therapy for common oral health problems in children, Provide treatment for mental, physical and emotionally handicapped children and also for the medically compromised patients., Recognize and manage medical emergencies commonly encountered in children and adolescent undergoing  treatment, Develop a preventive program for an individual patient.

It is a special branch of dentistry which deals with the alignment of the teeth.  The section of Orthodontics has a wide range of activities covering all aspects of Orthodontics are Preventive, Interceptive, Corrective and Surgical.

The goal of the Orthodontics program is to provide a basic and advance education in Orthodontics for and improved understanding of the diagnosis and treatment planning of various types of malocclusions and increased skill in their management.

9. PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY

Public Health Dentistry is concerned with the dental health education of the public, occurrence and magnitude of oral diseases, and prevention and control of oral diseases at mass level. Thus Dental public health is involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the dental health of populations rather than  individuals and is concerned primarily  with prevention of oral disease.

The goals of the speciality is to identify and measure the oral health problems and needs of the community, to identify  means by which these needs  can be best met within the constraints of resources.  To fullfill our goals, Oral health camps are organized in the rural, urban  area  schools, villages and various organizations where diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases  is carried out and the students are trained  to deliver  oral health care, diagnosis and prevention of oral diseases.
